Press Release/ 15 March 2019
As of January 1 to March 2 this year, the DOH Epidemiology Bureau has already reported 40,614 dengue cases. This is 16,383 or 68% higher compared to the same period last year (24,231 cases).
The DOH renewed its call to the public to prevent dengue by implementing the enhanced 4-S strategy in their households such as Search and destroy mosquito-breeding sites, Self-protection measures like wearing long pants and long sleeved shirts and daily use of mosquito repellent, Seek early consultation, and Support fogging/spraying only in hotspot areas where increase in cases is registered for two consecutive weeks to prevent an impending outbreak.
The World Health Organization said that there is no specific treatment for dengue, but early detection and access to medical care lowers fatality rates below 1%, and prevention is the key to fight dengue.
“We are encouraging the public to practice the 4-S strategy, especially now that there are more opportunities for the mosquitoes to make stagnant water around these water containers their breeding places,” Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque III concluded.
