Press Release | 15 May 2024

The Department of Health (DOH), led by Secretary Teodoro J. Herbosa along with Undersecretary Abdullah B. Dumama Jr., took part in the Abu Dhabi Global Healthcare Week from May 13 to 15, 2024 to bring global health leaders together to discuss the changes and challenges in global health.

This year’s theme, “Transforming the Global Health Ecosystem: From Healthcare to Health,” signifies a paradigm shift in global health approaches. The focus will transition from a reactive model of treating illnesses to a proactive emphasis on promoting holistic health and wellness.

On the first day, Secretary Herbosa tackled “Human UX: Maintaining Humanity in an Era of AI-Enabled and Digital Healthcare” and addressed the critical balance between rapid technological advancements and preserving the human-centered approach in healthcare, ensuring that technology enhances human interactions, supported by ethical AI and robust data privacy measures

Secretary Herbosa also highlighted the challenge of digitalizing healthcare in the Philippines, emphasizing the country’s unique geography, where 12% of Filipinos lack electricity, hindering digital technology use, especially in isolated areas. Despite progress during the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly 60% of households still lack internet access, and infrastructure remains inadequate outside the National Capital Region. He stressed the need to bridge these digital challenges by investing in telehealth and digital literacy programs.

Additionally, Secretary Herbosa shared one example of the country’s successful implementation of digital health – the advent of telemedicine that played a role in helping patients by offering remote healthcare services during the COVID-19 pandemic without visiting a health facility that reduced unnecessary burdens on the health system.

“As we navigate the intersection of technology and healthcare, we must remember that behind every data point and digital interface, there’s a human being seeking care and compassion. Let’s harness the power of innovation responsibly, ensuring that it serves humanity rather than replacing it,” expressed Secretary Herbosa.
