The Department of Health (DOH) reported that it has delivered checks to the families of healthcare workers who perished due to COVID-19, or those who contracted a severe form of the disease, pursuant to the Bayanihan to Heal As One Act..
Said law grants public and private healthcare workers who contract severe COVID-19 infection while in the line of duty to a P100,000 compensation, and one million pesos (P1,000,000) to the family of any health worker who may die while fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following the directive of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to immediately release the compensation to the bereaved families and recovered healthcare workers by June 9th, DOH in its accomplishment report announced that heirs of fallen health care workers due to COVID-19 have received compensation from the DOH.
All checks for 32 qualified beneficiaries of the one-million peso benefit have been issued, and 30 checks have been received by their families. Meanwhile, the Department is coordinating with the heirs of two fallen health care workers who are based abroad, in the United Kingdom and the United States of America, for the transfer of the government assistance.
On the other hand, two healthcare workers have been found ineligible based on the current implementing guidelines (DOH-DBM-DOLE Joint Administrative Order No. 2020-001), hence, their claimants have been delisted from the list of beneficiaries. The ineligibility was brought on by issues in the diagnoses specified in the death certificates.
As for the compensation for HCWs who contracted severe COVID-19, the Health Department also announced that it has also distributed all 19 checks for the health workers.
The distribution of the compensation benefits was facilitated by the Malasakit Program Office, under the Administration and Financial Management Team, and the Centers for Health Development through the Field Implementation and Coordination Team.
“These frontliners made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. We will honor their bravery by continuing their fight and ensuring that they will not have died for nothing. No amount will ever be enough to repay them for their significant contribution to the fight against COVID-19, but through this token of gratitude we hope the families they left behind are supported and taken care of,” Secretary Francisco Duque III said.
