The Department of Health (DOH), in collaboration with AHA! Behavioral Design®, will launch The Wellness Movement on August 7, 2023, the scale-out to all regions of its pioneering program specifically designed to support the well-being of healthcare frontliners in the country.

The program, intended for the promotion, establishment, and strengthening of Healthy Workplaces in support of the implementation of the country’s Universal Health Care Law and Mental Health Act, will employ practical behavioral approaches that have been proven effective to improve and support the wellness of hospital workers.

With its implementing partner, AHA! Behavioral Design®, the DOH tested and assembled behaviorally-informed tools and nudges that will help doctors, nurses, and allied hospital staff to practice wellness behaviors during various moments in the day and integrate them into their routine.

Based on research and previous program supported by the World Health Organization and the Australian Government, wellness tools can help increase overall well-being and potentially enhance overall quality of life of healthcare workers when used collectively. The research also saw an increase in the number of participating hospital workers’ overall mental health after three months in the program. Healthcare workers also found the tools helpful in terms of improving communication among co-workers and creating a positive work environment in the hospital.

This year’s launch will welcome 72 hospitals from all over the Philippines, adding 7,200 more members to The Wellness Movement, which has already reached 50 hospitals in the last three years, with support from the World Health Organization and the Australian Government during its third implementation phase. The launch will be held at the UP College of Medicine, Manila, in collaboration with Philippine General Hospital (PGH), which is part of this batch of hospitals. Simultaneous community activities will also take place at participating hospitals nationwide.

DOH Secretary Dr. Teodoro Herbosa, PGH Director Dr. Gerardo Legaspi, WHO Representative to the Philippines Dr. Rui de Jesus, DOH-CHD Metro Manila Assistant Regional Director Dr. Pretchell Tolentino, as well as other key DOH officials and program participants will be gracing the launch event.

“The Wellness Movement will not only become immensely beneficial to the overall welfare of our healthcare workers, but will also improve the quality of service that our patients receive. These initiatives are anchored on the Department’s 8-point Action Agenda, a health campaign that aims to effectively push for a more integrated healthcare system that connects the Filipino people to the country’s health sector, wherever they may be. We are focused on having this concretized dahil sa Healthy Pilipinas, Bawat Buhay Mahalaga,” said Secretary Herbosa.
