RED TIDE UPDATE NO.14
Inter - Agency Committee on Environmental Health
27 June 2001

The following areas are still POSITIVE for the toxic red tide organisms and red tide toxins:

  • Masinloc waters in Zambales;

  • Mandaon and Milagros waters in Masbate

  • Dumanguillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur.

Therefore, these areas remain to be under SHELLFISH BAN

On the other hand, results of monitoring activities in Manila Bay showed that its shellfishes and seawater are NEGATIVE of the red tide toxin and toxic red tide organisms, respectively. Hence, all shellfishes from this area are safe for human consumption.

The following areas continued to be FREE from toxic red tides:

  • Malarnpaya Sound in Palawan

  • Banago Waters in Bacolod City

  • Victorias Waters in Negros Occidental

  • Sapian Bay and Tinagong Dagat in Capiz

  • Maqueda and Villareal Bays in Western Samar

  • Calbayog Waters in Calbayog City

  • Cancabato Bay in Tacloban City

  • Illana and Sibuguey Bays, in Zamboanga del Sur

  • Tanguines Lagoon in Camiguin Island

  • and Balite Bay in Davao Oriental

Moreover, Acetes spp. or "alamang" from red-tide affected areas are not safe for human consumption.

Fish, squids, shrimps and crabs are safe for human consumption provided they are fresh and their internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed and washed thoroughly before cooking.

The red tide situation in the country is continuously monitored by the Red Tide Task Force in coordination with the LGUs for the protection of seafood consumers.
