HEALTH ADVISORY ON INFLUENZA

5 July 2002

The Department of Health (DOH) is warning the public against the possible rise in cases of influenza with the onset of rainy season.

According to experts, sudden changes in climate may result to influenza. The disease afflicts mostly schoolchildren, and even adults. A person gets infected through inhalation of the virus in the air, spread by infected persons through sneezing, coughing or talking.

The common signs and symptoms of flu include fever, headache, tiredness, sore throat, nasal congestion, muscle and joint pains and cough.

Flu can be prevented by covering the mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, by avoiding crowded places, and by having adequate rest and eating nutritious food.

Sick individuals are advised to stay home, rest and drink plenty of fluids. Paracetamol may be taken for fever. If symptoms persist, consult a physician.
