On ALLEGED ZULICAN VIRUS
Press Statement
/4 January 2005

A text message is circulating in the Philippines and other Asian countries stating: "Alert everybody. Very dangerous virus, Zulican virus is spreading through seafood so pls avoid eating seafoods & pls pass this msg to all your friends".

There has been no recent report to support the existence of any virus being spread through seafood. Searching from various sources, the name Zulican virus has not been found and is, therefore, non-existent.

Authorities, such as the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore and Malaysia 's health minister Datuk Dr. Chua Soi Lek, have already issued statements declaring the message a hoax.

Accordingly, the public is advised not to spread or listen to such text messages specially if they come from unknown sources. In general, seafood in the country is still safe to eat.
