WATCH OUT, FLOODS MAY BRING LEPTO
07
August 2002
The Department of Health (DOH)
today reminded the public to wash with soap and water after wading
in flood to avoid contracting leptospirosis as a result of the
constant flooding brought about by the rainy season.
"Leptospirosis cases increase
during the rainy season after flooding has occurred", Health
Secretary Manuel Dayrit said, adding that most cases have history
of wading in floodwaters contaminated with urine of infected animals
such as rats.
Dayrit further explained that
the problem of poor garbage disposal leading to the clogging of
the drainage system, heavy rains and presence of rats contribute
to the increase in cases.
As of July 27, there were 90 leptospirosis
cases admitted at the San Lazaro Hospital (SLH). This figure is
80% higher compared to the same period last year. Of the total
number of cases, ten died.
However, from July 1-27 alone,
there were 79 cases admitted at the SLH. Ages of the cases ranged
from 10-65 years. Majority (82%) of those affected were male.
Most (92%) of the cases came from the National Capital Region.
For the month of July alone, there were 8 deaths recorded.
Meanwhile, the DOH also reported
seven admitted leptospirosis cases at the Philippine General Hospital
from July 21-29. The cases came from Metro Manila and Cavite.
There was one reported fatality from Taguig.
Humans usually get infected by
leptospirosis through contact of the skin, especially if abraded,
or the mucous membranes with water, moist soil or vegetation,
contaminated with urine of infected animals. Incubation period
is usually 10 days.
The disease's common symptoms
include fever, headache, chills, body aches, nausea and abdominal
pain. Severe case is characterized by renal, hepatic and vascular
complications.
To prevent leptospirosis, preventive
and control measures like effective control of rats, maintenance
of a clean environment and the use of protective boots should
be done. The DOH also recommends local government units to make
a comprehensive plan on proper waste management at the barangay
level and conduct training on waste recycling and segregation.
