The Herbal Research and Processing
Plant (HRPP) of Region XI is located inside the Department of Health (DOH) compound in
Bajada, Davao City. The Plant became operational in March 1983. Through the years, the
Plant continuously manufactured Lagundi, Sambong and Tsaang-gubat tablets in order to
supply the ever growing demands of the Region. During the term of Secretary Alfredo
Bengzon, the HRPP was officially recognized. Financial support became regular. But with
the entry of Secretary Juan Flavier, the HRPP gained more prominence as to its importance
and significance. It became a turning point in the history of Philippine Traditional
Medicine that the herbal plants became a priority. Henceforth, the ten (10) priority
plants are now being promoted, namely: Lagundi, Ulasimang bato, Bayabas, Bawang, Yerba
Buena, Sambong, Ampalaya, Niyug-niyogan, Tsaang-gubat and Akapulko. From Traditional
Medicine Program, it became an institute by the approval of Republic Act No. 8423 known
as the Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act (TAMA) of 1997, creating the Philippine
Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care in which HRPP is a vital part in
manufacturing safe, effective and affordable herbal medicines. With more plants being
discovered and researched, the herbal plant facility should likewise undergo rapid
development. Indeed, it is envisioned that the HRPP of Region XI shall become one of the
best herbal plant manufacturers in the country in harmony with the goals and objectives
of the DOH towards the year 2003. To maximize its production
capability, laboratory equipment such as Heated Incubator and Strip Foiling Machine
will be purchased by DHRPP. |
