IT'S OKAY TO SAY YOU MIND. A signature campaign booklet in support of anti-tobacco legislation.

Introduction

Today, we know that tobacco is one of the leading causes of disease and death in the world, and that nicotine is addictive. The problem is complicated by the addictive properties of nicotine. If the tobacco epidemic is to be contained and eventually reduced, a million of smokers will have to break free from nicotine addiction. This will not be easy in a social environment that encourages children to think that smoking is about a lifetime of freedom, independence and sophistication.

Our message is simple. We can break free. Individuals can break free by stopping smoking, if necessary with the help of smoking cessation programs. The Department of Health and the World Health Organization are committed to supporting smoking cessation programs that are available, affordable and accessible. Families can break free by parents setting an example for their children.

Communities can break free by supporting legislation and ordinances of local governments that ban smoking in public places and ban advertising.

The media can break free by insisting that the issue of tobacco control is one that belongs to the arena of public policy.

Countries can break free by supporting national legislation such as SB 1554: STOP FOR HEALTH ACT (STOP TOBACCO AND OTHER PRODUCTS FOR HEALTH) that will restrict the legitimate use and sale of tobacco in the interest of public health through WHO's INTERNATIONAL FRAMEWORK CONVENTION FOR TOBACCO CONTROL (FCTC).

Together we can break free from this epidemic of addiction and disease.

Concerned with the ill effects and evil threats of tobacco use and its advertisements as well as the conspicuous sale of cigarettes to minors, we are affixing our signatures hereunder to manifest our pleadings to our legislators and other authorities to enact a law that would prohibit cigarette and other tobacco product advertisement and its sale to minors; and to support Senator Flavier's bill 1554: Stop for Health Act (Stop Tobacco and Other Products for Health) and the international framework convention on tobacco control (FCTC).
