Date Issued: September 21, 2001

Subject: WARNING ON THE POTENTIAL CHOKING HAZARDS POSED BY JELLY CUP TYPE CANDY

Following reports from the US FDA of the potential hazard posed by conjac jelly candies imported from Asia, the Bureau of Food and Drugs is warning consumers of this potential risk and is advising the public to take the necessary precaution when giving conjac jelly type candies to children and the elderly, especially those who may have difficulty in chewing or swallowing.

Jelly cup candies are sold in several fruit flavors. It is found in small sealed plastic cups that may or may not contain a chunk of fruit. Some local candies bear warning on the choking hazard suggesting that the candy be chewed thoroughly. However, many are sold with no warning label at all.

BFAD continues to investigate this matter.
